If you have stopped by the STScI booth at AAS, DPS, or other meetings, you may have experienced WebbVR, our fully immersive virtual reality experience created for public outreach and engagement. WebbVR allows you to explore the full-size JWST observatory and various astrophysical environments, such as the Solar System and the Orion Nebula, along with bonus information and interactive learning experiences.

Up to now, WebbVR was only accessible at events facilitated by STScI staff. But it is now available for free download through Steam, requiring only a compatible virtual reality headset to enjoy the full experience. With the right equipment, you might find it a useful tool to supplement your teaching or outreach activities.

With WebbVR, you can:

  • Visit JWST in its orbit at L2 and look out from its perspective on the universe
  • Compare JWST with HST and WFIRST
  • Explore the Solar System, a protoplanetary disk, and a spiral galaxy

Interactive experiences include building your own planet, sending stars into a black hole, and seeing how changing the mass of a star alters the course of its lifecycle.

Developed in partnership with Northrop Grumman, the WebbVR environment puts users in the midst of science concepts, presenting realistic, data-based collision physics, Newtonian gravity, gas viscosity, and the electromagnetic spectrum in a new, accessible way.
