JWST Community Lecture Series - NIRISS Aperture Masking Interferometry Overview (A. Sivaramakrishnan)

Community Lecture
March 28, 2017 11:00 AM EDT - March 28, 2017  12:00 PM EDT
Baltimore STScI Muller Auditorium

Abstract:

I will highlight the strengths of JWST NIRISS’ Aperture Masking Interferometry (AMI) mode, and present a few science cases to demonstrate its use.  AMI imaging enables moderate contrast 3-5 micron imaging, at 70-400 mas separations, where JWST’s coronagraphs at comparable wavelengths are blind.  The AMI mode also opens up bright object imaging, bringing GPI and SPHERE extreme AO targets within the reach of JWST imaging.  I will outline the PSF calibrator needs of AMI observations, and explain how to estimate required exposure times and create an AMI proposal using the Astronomers’ Proposal Tool.
