JWST ESAC Workshop - Mastering the Science Instruments and the Observing Modes of JWST: Get Set

Training Workshop
October 4 - 6, 2017
ESAC, Madrid, Spain

The European Space Agency is sponsoring this JWST proposal preparation workshop, which will be held at ESAC, near Madrid, Spain. The 2.5 day workshop is scheduled to take place a few weeks before the JWST Cycle 1 call for General Observer (GO) proposals.

Prospective JWST users will gain hands-on experience with various tools that support the development and submission of proposals. Tools include, but are not limited to:

  •  Exposure Time Calculator - Estimate signal-to-noise for observations of constructed astronomical scenes.
  •  Astronomer’s Proposal Tool - Specify observations and submit proposals.
  •  Micro-shutter Planning Tool - Plan multi-object spectroscopy observations that use the NIRSpec Micro-Shutter Assembly.
  •  Visibility Tools - Predict visibility windows and allowed position angles in general for all instruments and specifically for coronagraphs.

For each tool there will be an introductory presentation, a demonstration, and then a hands-on session. Experts from NASA, ESA, CSA, and STScI will support workshop participants in these practical sessions. The Program Organizing Committee will engage the astronomical community to generate the science cases for the hands-on sessions.

All training materials used during the workshop will be provided to participants after the workshop.

More detailed information will be published on the workshop website:  http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/jwst-2017-esac

Details on the registration process and  a  draft agenda  of the workshop will be made available in mid-July with the second announcement.
