JWST Proposal Planning Workshop

Training Workshop
December 11 - 14, 2017
Caltech, Pasadena, CA

This workshop will take place shortly after the announcement of the programs selected under the first JWST open call for proposals (the Directory Discretionary Early Release Science Programs), and shortly before their observing files (meant to serve as models for the general observer community) become public. Therefore,  the workshop will coincide with active proposal preparation for the next open call for proposals. Its goals are to provide general information regarding JWST capabilities, proposal process and opportunities, and hands-on teaching for the following proposal planning tools:

We plan to illustrate the proposal planning process and the tools mentioned above using a representative subset of observing programs, describing the science and technical motivation and guiding participants through ETC calculations and Target Visibility and APT planning. Programs will include:

  • Multi Object Spectroscopy of bright and faint sources
  • NIRCam and MIRI Coordinated Parallel Imaging
  • NIRISS Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy
  • NIRSpec and MIRI Integral Field Spectroscopy
  • NIRCam and MIRI Coronagraphy
  • NIRISS SOSS and NIRCam Time Series

More information on JWST capabilities and observing opportunities can be found in the JWST User Documentation (JDox) pages.

For questions regarding the workshop you can contact us at JWSTWORKSHOP_2017DEC-request@maillist.stsci.edu

Registration

Registration is now open. The registration deadline is November 15, 2017. The following are the voucher codes to use when registering:

  • PPW_ATTENDEE
  • PPW_SPEAKER
  • PPW_SOC
  • PPW_LOC

The workshop registration fee includes AM and PM refreshments and lunch on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Interested participants from local institutions that follow NASA policies regarding reimbursements can attend without registering, with the understanding that they should refrain from partaking in the refreshments. Local participants wishing to partake in the refreshments will need to register.

Remote participation will also be possible via Webex or Live Streaming. Remote participants will not need to register, but should send an email to JWSTWORKSHOP_2017DEC-request@maillist.stsci.edu so they can be added to the workshop distribution list to receive relevant workshop information (e.g. agenda, connection information, software installation instructions, links to training material, etc.).

This is mainly a training workshop, but participants interested in presenting a poster should send the title, author list and abstract to JWSTWORKSHOP_2017DEC-request@maillist.stsci.edu.

Slack

For the duration of the workshop, to allow for the fast exchange of information among the onsite and remote participants and STScI support staff, we invite everyone involved to join the JWST Proposal Planning Slack team. A few default channels have been created for discussions involving APT, ETC, the target visibility tools, coronagraphy and mosaics, but more can be created by users as needed. A search bar allows you to scan the channels for specific information. Below is the invitation to join the JWST Proposal Planning Slack team:

https://join.slack.com/t/jwstppsdec2017/shared_invite/MjM4NTUyNzYxMjcxLTE1MDQ3NzMwMzUtYzlmYzI4OThhOQ

Slack can be accessed from any desktop or mobile app. You will need to create a username and password. After you have joined, the direct access is:
