The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is pleased to announce the release of the Cycle 1 Call for Proposals for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Director’s Discretionary Early Release Science (DD ERS) Program . Only investigators who previously submitted Notices of Intent are allowed to submit a full proposal. Proposals are due August 18, 2017.

The DD ERS program allocates 500 hours of Director’s Discretionary Time with zero proprietary time. The program is designed to:

  • ensure open access to representative datasets and science-enabling products in support of the preparation of Cycle 2 proposals,
  • engage a broad cross-section of the astronomical community in the use of  JWST data and scientific capabilities,
  • enrich the overall scientific return of the mission in the four major science themes,
  • assist with proposal preparation by providing sample APT files, and
  • help fine-tune the proposal planning process.

We received 200 NOIs in March  representing various science categories covering the four JWST science themes. Following a two-stage review process, up to 15 programs will be accepted. Accepted programs will be announced in November.
